The automated message said that the caller was from HM Revenue and Customs, and if I didn't call them back or get my solicitor to call them back, I would have to face the consequences, which sounded very threatening.

The scammer pretends to be from HMRC and leaves a voicemail saying to call a certain number or face legal consequences. However, HM Revenue and Customs does not use voicemails threatening legal action. If you receive such a voicemail, report it to the HM Revenue and Customs fraud line.
