automatic ring supposed to be from nonspecific "card services" saying that large unauthorised payments were going through against my card. I hang up as I guess it was a scam.

They called me, but I never picked up, when I re-dailed, they said they did not call, they had only just got back from holiday & they thought this had happened once before, I thought it odd so I had now blocked the number. They are in the same area code as myself
Do not answer their calls pretending to be from TalkTALK. These scam artists are doing a huge disservice to the community by getting people to invest in their products.
After pretending to be from Microsoft with a problem on my PC, I hung up.
